Former Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi defeated New York State Sen. Jack Martins (R-Old Westbury) in the most closely watched Congressional race on Long Island Tuesday night, winning the seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington).
The New York City Council recently announced it is setting aside $100,000 to study the pros and cons of supervised injection facilities where, under the watchful eye of a health-care professional, drug users can shoot heroin using sterile equipment with naloxone nearby to treat accidental overdoses. It’s an interesting idea, and there are more than 100 such facilities in six countries, but I hate it.

The Press requested lists of licensed dog names from all 13 towns across LI and tallied the results from Hempstead, Brookhaven and Southampton—the only three municipalities that had such data to provide. Ex-Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi and U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-Queens) won Long Island Democratic congressional primaries Tuesday, but a third local race was too close to call, according to unofficial results. Suozzi decalred victory with 36 percent of the vote in the crowded field of five Democrats seeking to replace outgoing U.S. Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington), who’s not seeking re-election. Meeks, who represents part of Nassau County, easily fended off Democratic challenger Ali Mirza, a publicist and county worker. But former Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst had a slim 29-vote lead over opponent David Calone, a former federal prosecutor turned venture capitalist.

Three beaches on Long Island from the East End to the New York City line were named among the best in the country by experts and national publications last month. It’s been widely reported that Dr. Beach named Cooper’s Beach in Southampton among top 10 in the nation on his annual list released May 26. The news also spread that USA Today gave Long Beach a similar nod in a story published the same day. But a third report, this one by Travel and Leisure magazine, also ranked Shelter Island among the best—and Long Beach got a second hat tip in that story, too.
“It was like being in some movie of Land of The Lost, where you saw things that you were not supposed to see in life,” Cuomo said. “I mean you would have liked to have lived your whole life and not had seen these things or experienced them because then you can’t get them out of your mind once you’ve seen them. I mean it was terrible.”
