Ricky Rubio is finally coming to the NBA.
A source told the Associated Press that Rubio—who is currently playing in the Euroleague playoffs—will play next season.
Timberwolves spokesman Mike Cristaldi, however, told the AP, “As of now, we have nothing new to report.”
Rubio was being discussed as a potential NBA prospect during the 2008 Summer Olympics, when he competed in the gold medal game against USA.
A deal was originally made for Rubio to come over to the Timberwolves in 2009. Instead, he backed out of the deal and stayed with DVC Joventut, the team he played for in Spain. In order for Rubio to come to the NBA, he had to pay $6 million out of his own pocket for a buyout of his contract.
Later that summer he was traded to another Spanish club, FC Barcelona. Rubio signed a six-year contract, which made the wait for Minnesota become even longer than expected.
The Timerbwolves have gone 32-132 since the 2009 draft. Last season they were the 25th ranked team in assist, which makes the value of Rubio, the young point guard more important for the Wolves future.
Rubio will be joining a core group that consists of the first-time all-star, Kevin Love and scoring threat, Michael Beasley.
