Det. Cote holding up recording device allegedly used by Wilson Lopez

On Thursday, Nassau County Police said they arrested a man for installing a surveillance camera in the women’s restroom at Elements Lighting in Carle Place.

According to police, Wilson Lopez, 24, a resident of Levittown and employee at Elements Lighting in Carle Place, allegedly set up a camera with the intention to view a female coworker during use of the toilet. The device was discovered by a repairman who submitted it to the store’s manager, who terminated Lopez and contacted the Nassau County Police Department.

“The manager saw that there was a USB port on the device and loaded it onto his computer and saw an image of Lopez operating the device while positioning it on a bench and aligning it in the direction of the toilet,” Detective Lt. Raymond Cote said at a press conference on Thursday.

Wilson made two attempts to view the female coworker undress, however it wasn’t until the second attempt that the surveillance captured the woman using the bathroom, police said. Cote said he does not believe that any other video recordings were taken of other female employees, adding that “to the best of our knowledge and from what Mr. Lopez tells us, he did this twice to record a woman he was attracted to, who was obviously not aware of that.”

Police said Lopez admitted to installing the camera in the women’s restroom and was apprehended at his home on Wednesday. He was arraigned Thursday morning at First District Court in Hempstead and is facing two counts of unlawful surveillance. Lopez has one prior DWI conviction, police said.
