Suffolk County has partnered with a cyber firm to offer a year of identity theft protection at no cost for those whose information may have been stolen in the recent cyber attack.
The complimentary program from the cyber program Kroll will provide impacted individuals with Triple Bureau Credit Monitoring, Identity Theft Restoration Services. and Identity Fraud Loss Reimbursement.
“The protection of personal, sensitive information is a top priority for the county,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “The identity protection services the county is offering through Kroll will help provide peace of mind to individuals who may have had specific pieces of their personal information exposed.”
An investigation found that the Driver’s License numbers taken from about 470,000 moving violation traffic stops were exposed in the Suffolk County data breach. This could include anyone stopped for a moving violation in Suffolk from 2013 through Sept. 8, 2022.
The cyber attack also could have exposed identification numbers from any type of ID, license or passport given at TPVA in Hauppauge when paying by credit card for Suffolk County-issued tickets, including parking tickets.
Individuals who meet either of the two criteria are eligible and can apply for the free credit monitoring and identity theft protection and reimbursement at suffolkcounty.kroll.com. The services must be activated by Feb. 17, 2023.
The cyber attack in Suffolk County was first announced in late September and an investigation and restoration of online county services has been ongoing.
