Suffolk County police have not made any arrests a year after a 13-year-old girl found a blade inside of a mini candy bar that was gotten after trick or treating last Halloween in the Stony Brook and Setauket area, authorities said.
The girl, who traded candy with her classmates at PJ Gelinas Junior High School days after Halloween, made the discovery in a fun-sized 3 Musketeers bar on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022, when her mother reported the incident to police, authorities said. There were no reported injuries.
Police had urged residents to make sure adults are present when children open candy they received from trick or treating, especially in Stony Brook and Setauket.
Similar incidents were reported nationwide last year. Police in Oregon reportedly issued a warning after blades were found in Halloween candy in Eugene.
Cases of Halloween candy tampering reached urban legend status after a Houston man poisoned children with pixie sticks in 1974, killing his 8-year-old son.
Sixth Precinct officers are continuing the investigation and ask anyone with information to call them at 631-854-8626 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
