Youth and the Future of the Pro-Life Movement
The Nassau Community College Center for Catholic Studies invites the community to this Scholarly Lecture at 9 a.m. in the College Center Building. Several college and high school students will make scholarly presentations on various aspects of the pro-life perspective. Professors and individuals from pro-life organizations will serve as discussants for the student presentations. Three recently deceased Catholic intellectuals will be honored. Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray To Speak
Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray will be the featured speaker at the Eastern Property Owners’ Association’s annual meeting, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the large meeting room of the Garden City Library. Supervisor Murray will begin speaking at 8 p.m., allowing time for questions afterward. Voting for all 10 members of the Garden City East Nominating Committee that proposes candidates for village-wide offices, village board of trustees and school board trustees will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. Only qualified voters who live in the East may vote in this election. Also on the agenda are updates on current issues and reports from Trustees, Nick Episcopia and Dennis Donnelly, with questions and answers to follow. Election of EPOA officers, directors and nominating committee members is scheduled too. Every resident of the East has been mailed the EPOA newsletter, which contains all candidate resumes and election information. This is also available for everyone on the EPOA website: www.gcepoa.org. The meeting is open to the public and Garden City residents from all sections of the village are encouraged to attend.
Herricks High School Ensemble
The Herricks High School select music ensembles, including the Wind Ensemble, the Chamber Choir, Women’s Choir and the Chamber Orchestra will perform in concert at the new Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, 2 South Ave., at 7:30 p.m. The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Scott Stickley, is a highly skilled group of musicians who have earned highest ratings at NYSSMA, have performed at the MENC All-Eastern Conference as well as the NYSSMA Winter Conference. The Chamber Choir, under the direction of Louise O’Hanlon, has consistently won Gold with Distinction ratings at NYSSMA and has performed in several local choral festivals. The newly-formed Women’s Choir, also under Ms. O’Hanlon’s direction, will attend NYSSMA this year, for the first time. The Chamber Orchestra, led by Robin Maddox, has also won highest NYSSMA ratings. This spring they performed at the American String Teachers Convention in Atlanta in an invitational competition won Superior ratings and an Honorable Mention. Free and open to the public. GC Historical Society
The Garden City Historical Society will hold its annual meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Garden City Historical Society Museum, 109 Eleventh St. All members are welcome to attend. In addition, the society’s board of directors invites any Garden City resident or local business representative who wish to become a member to join on that night. Membership forms will be available. The meeting agenda will include a brief presentation by officers and directors and the installation of officers for the coming year. The meeting will be followed by light refreshments and the opportunity for attendees to visit the museum, its gift shop and the A.T. Stewart Exchange. The board of directors hopes that as members learn more about the society that they will be inspired to volunteer on one of the various working committees. There’s plenty happening at the museum, from archival work and merchandizing to event planning and assisting with the upcoming annual flea market, scheduled for June 6.

The Future of Nonprofit Organizations – A Brave and New World will be held at Adelphi University’s Ruth S. Red Molly in Concert
Red Molly (Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner and Carolann Solebello) will perform in concert at Garden Stage at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at 8 p.m. Red Molly’s first full-length offering, Never Been to Vegas, was released in July 2006. Recorded before a studio audience of fans and friends, it is a collection of 14 carefully chosen songs that span more than a century of great American songwriting.

A Salute to America. The 12th annual Belmont Festival at Garden City. This year’s event, which will have a red, white and blue theme, will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. on Seventh St. The United States Air Force Band, the Afterburners, will be featured along with several other bands. Mill Neck Manor is calling for vendors of handmade items for its Annual Fall Harvest Festival, held on Oct. 10 and 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A favorite tradition on LI, visitors eagerly await the festival for its crafts, apples, pumpkins, pies and other delicious treats. If you make or sell crafts and feel that you would be a great addition to the Festival, you are encouraged to apply. Vendors are assigned an outdoor space (10’x10’) with a table and two chairs. All vendors are required to have a tent or canopy; those vendors who do not own a suitable tent may rent one from Mill Neck Manor for a small fee.
