As you can see Long Island IS a resort! Today, the Ward Melville Heritage Organization announced the opening of an exhibit in their Educational and Cultural Center entitled “Long Island: The World’s Largest Resort.”

This exhibit is a snapshot of the best of Long Island all in one place. There will be sand from Cooper’s Beach (voted the best beach in the country in 2010); “Eight Ball,” a 1908 S.S. #8 Class Sloop boat from the Long Island Maritime Museum and other items illustrating life as an oysterman; a wine press, grape vine and corking machine from the North Fork Wine Country; items showing life on the Long Beach Boardwalk circa 1910; a replica of the Montauk Lighthouse, a Scrimshaw and other items that sailors made in the late 1800’s from Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum; aircraft models from the Cradle of Aviation, items from Long Island Aquarium, a “1909 Vanderbilt Cup Race on Motor Parkway” diorama, a Long Island Motor Parkway License Plate (first EZ pass) from the Vanderbilt Museum and much more.

The exhibit opens July 7, with a grand opening scheduled July 10. Activities that day will include a 14 foot x 21 foot BD-5 home built futuristic aircraft, a putting contest with Palmer Van Tuyl, “Can you putt better than an eight year old?” (The winners receive a sleeve of golf balls. Proceeds from this activity will go to the Stony Brook University Medical Center Children’s Hospital.) In addition, a Great Rock Golf Pro will be on hand to give visitors swing instructions. There will be carriage rides, live music with Walkie Bear from WALK Radio, refreshments and specials throughout the Stony Brook Village Center.

Admission to the exhibit is $5.00 per person. The exhibit will be open 10 am to 5 pm daily through Labor Day. The Educational and Cultural Center is located in the Stony Brook Village Center. For additional information call, 631-689-5888.
