Head-on Calverton Crash Leaves 3 Hospitalized

Five people were hospitalized after two vehicles crashed head on in Calverton early Sunday morning, Riverhead Town Police said.

At about 10:40 a.m., Emily Bongiorno was driving her Jeep east on Rt. 25 when she crossed over the double yellow line and reportedly met another Jeep, driven by Richard Matheson, traveling west on Rt.25, head on.

Police responded to the two car accident east of Edwards Avenue in Calverton. Volunteers from the Riverhead Ambulance Corps and Wading River Fire Department also rushed to the scene and treated the three motorists involved in the crash including Emliy Bongiorno, Richard Matheson and his wife, Jacqueline Matheson, who was sitting in the passenger seat at the time of the crash.

Riverhead Fire Department extricated both Richard and Jacqueline from their vehicle.  Richard Matheson, of Hauppauge, was flown from the scene to Stony Brook University Hospital via helicopter, while Bongiorno, of Mt.Sinai, and Jacqueline, of Hauppauge, were taken via ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The accident is still under investigation and police are asking anyone with information to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 727-4500 ext 321.
