2011 Finale USATF- Long Island Cross Country Season on Stillwell Woods Course
The finishing times were exceptionally competitive in this year’s Rob’s Run, with the first 27 runners scoring in under 18 minutes. Seventeen-year-old Nick Mavros of Oyster Bay came in 21st place overall – in that tight pack.
There were 51 runners who came in under 19 minutes, and 78 runners breaking the magic 20 minute mark.
First in the pack was Chris Mammone of the Bellmore Striders who doesn’t quite own Rob’s Run, but he solidified his hold on what has become a long-term lease of the event this Nov. 27 by scoring in first place overall for the fourth year in a row. Mammone crossed the finish line at Stillwell Woods Field in Woodbury with a 15:46 finish that was only 15 seconds slower than his 2010 winning time.
The weather for this year’s 19th annual edition of Long Island Blood Services Rob’s Run was absolutely spectacular – good enough so that for the first time ever we were able to move the refreshments and the awards outdoors, and this year’s finale of the USATF-Long Island Cross Country season welcomed 543 finishers to the Stillwell Woods course.
The Run was hosted by the Greater Long Island Running Club, with GLIRC’s Jim Murray and Sue Fitzpatrick serving as the co-directors of the event. Thanks go to Long Island Blood Services for their sponsorship of the Run once again.
GLIRC was pleased to welcome three of Rob Lauterborn’s brothers to the Run once again this year. The Run is conducted in the memory of their brother Rob, an outstanding runner and wonderful human being, who left us far too soon 20 years ago.
“We are thrilled at the success of this year’s Run,” observed Co-Director Sue Fitzpatrick. We hope that everyone enjoyed the high quality gym bag that served as a different kind of giveaway to all the participants this year, and that as many of you as possible will show your support for the Run by giving “the Gift of Life” at the Athletes for Life Blood Drive at the Melville Marriott on December 18th .”
Hold the date for next year – Sunday, November 25, 2012, and the 20th annual edition of Long Island Blood Services Rob’s Run!
