Spring Awakening
The Nassau Community College Department of Theatre and Dance presents Spring Awakening, its spring musical. The play will be performed March 15 through 18 and March 21 through 25 at the Mainstage Theatre, Garden City. Spring Awakening, which is rated R, celebrates the unforgettable journey from youth to adulthood with a power, poignancy and passion that viewers will never forget. Adapted from Frank Wedekind’s 1891 expressionist play about the trials, tears and exhilaration of the teen years, the play explores the tortured inner lives of a handful of adolescents in 19th-century Germany with a rock musical score. Tickets cost $15 each; seniors aged 55 and over $12. College students with valid current ID can obtain free rush tickets at the door for that day’s performance. Pain Management Support Group
Individuals dealing with chronic and intermittent pain are invited to join Winthrop-University Hospital’s free ongoing support group on Thursdays from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Sessions are held at the Winthrop Wellness Pavilion, 1300 Franklin Ave., Suite ML-5, Garden City. The group is conducted in affiliation with Winthrop’s Pain Management Center under the direction of Edward S. Rubin, MD. Breast Cancer Treatment Medical Forum
Two breast cancer medical experts will present the Newest Trends in Breast Cancer Treatment at a medical forum conducted by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The program will be presented at 7 p.m. at the Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom at Adelphi University, Garden City. Speakers are Kathie-Ann Joseph, MD, and Steven M. Sugarman, MD. The doctors will present recent treatment advances, information on health care and survival disparities and up-dates on clinical trials/investigational treatments. Nassau All-County Art Exhibition
The Art Supervisors Association of NC welcomes students, parents, art educators, administrators and community members to attend the 2012 Nassau All-County Art Exhibition, which will take place at the Ruth S. Harley Center at Adelphi University, Garden City, from noon to 4 p.m. This exhibition, with no admission charge, will honor more than 1100 kindergarten through twelfth grade students who have demonstrated excellence in a wide variety of two-dimensional visual art forms including drawing, painting, printmaking, computer graphics, and photography. Student entries are selected by art educators and are limited to a maximum of three pieces of artwork from each teacher. All of the exemplary pieces are produced in alignment with the New York State Learning Standards for the Visual Arts. This year, 400 art educators from more than 200 schools in 40 Nassau County school districts, will submit student artwork for this prestigious exhibit.

Cognitive Issues in People with Epilepsy
The Epilepsy Foundation of LI will feature Sarah Schaffer, PhD, ABPP-CN at a workshop at 506 Stewart Ave., Garden City. Dr. Schaffer is senior neuropsychologist at the North Shore-LIJ Comprehensive Care Center and assistant professor of neurology at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. This workshop will address the impact of seizure activity, medication side-effects and mood problems, as well as ways to remediate such problems and a discussion of when neuropsychological evaluation may be indicated. The workshop will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Training hours are available for Medicaid service coordinators. Issues in Judaism Lecture Series
The Hofstra Cultural Center and Hofstra Hillel’s Issues in Judaism Lecture Series presents two lectures by Michael Tuchfeld, one of Israel’s leading broadcast journalists. This is Mr. Tuchfeld’s eighth annual visit to Hofstra to present timely lectures on current topics regarding Israel and the Middle East. He is a political analyst and media consultant. He is also former parliamentary correspondent and host of Israel Radio, IBA and Channel 2 news, The Knesset Channel in Jerusalem, Israel. A question and answer period will follow each lecture. Lectures take place at 7 p.m. at the Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, First Floor, South Campus, Hempstead. Tickets for each lecture are priced separately at $8, $7 for senior citizens (over 65 with I.D.); $5 for matriculated non-Hofstra students (with ID). Nassau Community College, in conjunction with Nassau University Medical Center, invites the community to donate blood during its Annual Spring Blood Drive, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the College Center Building. Night of Laughter
The Sarah Grace Foundation will host its 9th Annual Night of Laughter benefit fundraiser at the Milleridge Cottage, 585 North Broadway, Jericho. Host Rick Morgan will lead the event, which will feature John Santo, impersonator; Ellen Karis, The Greek Goddess of Comedy FoxTV; Rich Ramirez, HBO-BET, Last Comic Standing; and Pete Michaels of Late Night with Conan O’Brien. The unique evening of entertainment is recommended for mature audiences. The event, which costs $75 per person with advance purchase required, will begin at 7:15 p.m. Admission includes show, dinner, raffles and a big 50/50. LI Quilters Show Off
The LI Quilters’ Society biennial quilt extravaganza “Quilting Long Island” will be held on March 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and March 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Garden City Field House, 295 Stewart Ave., Garden City. The show, in which Long Island quilters share their takes on local communities and resources, will feature more than 200 traditional and art quilts created by regional quilters. The Guild plans a shopping mall with 22 vendors, comfort quilt construction, quilting demonstrations, members’ boutique, challenge quilts on display, along with a fashion show at 2 p.m. on Saturday featuring Hoffman Challenge wearables and locally-made quilted garments. Organ Recital by Katherine Meloan
Katherine Meloan is director of chapel music at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in King’s Point where she is the director of chapel choirs and plays for all services. She has served as music director at Trinity-Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Hewlett and is currently organist at Beth Sholom in Bayside. Katherine is a doctoral candidate in organ performance at Manhattan School of Music. She has an active interest in teaching and is writing her doctoral thesis on Organ Pedagogy for Beginning Organists. Katherine will be playing music of Marcel Dupré, Charles-Marie Widor and J.S. Senator Hannon is participating in the Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank “Join Hearts for Hunger” Legislative Food Drive Challenge, which helps LI Cares to feed more than 300,000 food insecure Long Islanders.
