After a long and protracted decision process over the course of many months, I entered a long and arduous campaign with the Village Independent Party (VIP) to seek the trustee position. Many demands were put on family, friends and myself. Most of my life has centered on serving and helping others, so this was a welcomed challenge to be endured. The others on the team, Georgiana Sena and Susan Miles, are two fine people who possess a profound sense of civic responsibility.
On the campaign trail, I met the many fine people in our village. I had the privilege to share ideas and comments with them. I can only say that I was amazed by what I had heard and observed during my house-to-house, and business-to-business ventures throughout the village. Everyone loved living here, but some expressed uneasiness about the village’s future.
Great amounts of people were somewhat unhappy with certain conditions in the village, and felt disconnected from government. Some even felt intimidated by some of the village officials. Many wanted “something” done soon and expected positive action/results without the long delays. However, many of the same people admitted taking no part in the government process, nor did they keep abreast of the many issues facing us, such as the “revitalization” proposal.
One more thing: during the campaign, I was surprised at the childish behavior of some unknown persons who, on a nightly basis, destroyed and stole many VIP lawn signs throughout the village. I did contact the Eighth Precinct for assistance in the matter.
In retrospect, I was proud to take part in a long and cherished American election process. Many, including myself, served in the military to protect this right. It would be nice to see more people exercise this freedom. I want to thank all the people who supported me. I will remain active in the affairs of the village. Also, I want to wish the newly elected mayor and trustees good fortune, and ask God to bless their efforts.
