A power outage in northern Virginia is to blame for Instagram going down, and making it impossible for people to post images on the popular photo-sharing app Saturday morning.

The social network sent out a tweet Saturday explaining why the app was not responding when users attempted to use it.

“Due to severe electrical storms, our host had a power outage, no data is lost – we’ve been working through the night to restore service,” Instagram tweeted.

Instagram wasn’t alone.

Mashable reported that sites such as Pinterest and Netflix, which are powered by Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud, were also affected by the mass outages.

Violent storms reportedly ripped through many Eastern U.S. states, causing mass outages. A wave of thunderstorms knocked out power to more than 2 million people in Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, West Virginia, Indiana and Ohio, The Associated Press reported.

The massive storm is also being blamed for the deaths of nine people in the region.

Users of the popular app took to Twitter to complain about Instagram going down, with some expressing anger over their inability to post images. Others decided to use this rare opportunity to take some shots at the people who are addicted to the app.
