Nassau County residents can now access automobile accident reports through an online database, officials announced on Monday.
Any accident that occurred on or after April 1 is available in a LexisNexis database, accessible through the Nassau County Police Department website. It requires either a report number or the first and last names of an accident victim.
Obtaining a report costs $14, $4 more than getting one at a police precinct, due to an online service charge. Nassau is the first jurisdiction in New York to have access to the database.
County Executive Ed Mangano said the new service is “a great way to become more efficient for the police department.”
“One of the most common reasons a resident comes to the precinct is to obtain a copy of an accident report,” he said. “This simple but smart initiative makes life a little bit easier for residents involved in an automobile accident.”
About 39 thousand accident reports are filed in Nassau every year. Police Commissioner Tom Dale said the new management system will save both residents and precincts time, as it can take up to 10 minutes to pick up a report in person. That method is also still an option for county residents.
Mangano’s announcement comes the same day as the county police department’s merger between the sixth and third police precincts, which is the second phase of a four-part precinct consolidation plan.
