Gold Award For Girl Scout

Evangeline Giannopoulos of Girl Scout Troop 620, will receive a Gold Award in June for her workshop, which addressed the issue of women being undermined in the world of science. The project involved science workshops for young girls in the New Hyde Park community and is being sustained through a Facebook group.

Giannopoulos organized science workshops for young girls, in an effort to foster a passion for science despite gender.  The workshops were held in the Clinton G. Martin Community room on Sundays during the winter.

Girls from New Hyde Park and surrounding communities attended. Each workshop had a mini-lesson taught to girls and the majority of the workshop showcased hands-on activities. Giannopoulos taught about the different organelles of cells, their functions and then had girls make their own model cells of food (jelly beans as mitochondria, etc.)
