From the East Woods School
The muggy and slightly gray morning was no match for the 208 smiling faces that climbed the East Woods steps for the first day of the 2013 – 2014 school year. As the students were greeted by the new Head of East Woods School, Matthew H. Bradley, the excitement and energy of the day was palpable. From the 2-year-olds experiencing their first-ever day of school in the East Woods pre-nursery class, to the eighth-graders who have been there for a decade, the students were all eager to greet old friends and meet new ones. Parents were equally as enthusiastic for the academic year to begin. Cameras at the ready, parents documented the first day of school with a sense of pride and already a twinge of nostalgia.
The Opening Day Ceremony was marked by the traditional recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the singing of the school song. Both were introduced by Student Council President Morgan McCartan and Vice President Avery Bederman. Morgan and Avery then introduced Matt Bradley for his Opening Day remarks.
Mr. Bradley first expressed his excitement that the 2013 – 2014 school year has arrived, and then he thanked the East Woods community for the warm welcome given to his wife Melinda, and their three children. Following in the words of the East Woods mission statement that this school is “…a nurturing community…” Mr. Bradley had everyone – students, faculty, staff and parents – turn to the people around them and introduce themselves with a smile and a handshake. He then, accompanied by loud and enthusiastic applause, introduced all the members of the East Woods faculty and staff. With the Opening Day ceremony completed, the start of the school year is officially underway. The East Woods faculty, students and parents are looking forward to a wonderful year full of hands-on learning, fun with friends, and myriad opportunities.
East Woods School is an independent, co-educational pre-nursery through eighth grade school, including a full-day kindergarten program. East Woods School is located on 46-acres in Oyster Bay.
