North 10th Street residence gets a makeover
Boy Scout Troop 298 lent a helping hand to a local residence, doing a major cleanup project that encompassed landscaping a home on North 10th Street. Assistant Scoutmaster Rich Pallisco and Andrew Rezin, the troop’s scoutmaster, led a team of six boys to aide two elderly sisters in cleaning up their home.
Armed with lawnmowers, rakes and weedwackers, the clean-up took about two hours at the 40×100 property, according to Pallisco. The homes owners, two elderly women, who were not identified, can’t care for the home anymore.
Weeds grew through the fence and onto the adjacent sidewalk while the grass and shrubbery needed upkeep, along with tree pruning. The homeowners were truly grateful, says Pallisco. The work went towards the scouts’ 12-hour community service requirements.
“Residents were complaining,” Pallisco said. “The weeds were very high. The stockade fence that ran parallel was knocked down. It was a mess.”
Scouts filled at least 12 extra-large garbage bags filled with dead grass. The fence had to be demolished.
“Sanitation won’t take the wooden stockade fence,” Pallisco said. “The whole thing just fell down.”
Deputy Mayor Lawrence Montreuil praised the troop at a recent village board meeting.
“I commended Rich Pallisco and Troop 298…at one of the recent meetings, a resident brought to our attention that there was a house that was having issues with property maintenance,” Montreuil said. “There was a lot of weeds growing from the house. [The resident] was concerned that there were elderly women there and she hadn’t seen them in some time.”
Montreuil alerted Pallisco to the dilapidated residence, which prompted the troop to assemble at the New Hyde Park home.
“We do a lot of work around the village,” Pallisco said. “It was a great experience and I’m happy everything turned out real nice.”
