Emanuel “Manny” Greene, of Plandome Manor, passed away on November 10, 2013 in his 98th year. Born in the Old Stone House in Hasbrouck, NY, now a landmark and museum, he went on to start a paper and plastic disposable business from the trunk of his car in the 1930’s and grew it to be the largest firm of its kind in the NY Metropolitan area by the 1960’s.
He was happiest sitting on his deck with his entire immediate family looking at Manhasset Bay and relating stories of his life – sailing, travels, politics and current events. He thought the most beautiful sight in the world was the sunset over Manhasset Bay.
Manny was an avid collector of art, a bonsai gardener and spent hours walking backwards on his heels redesigning his Zen rock garden in his backyard. He won the Bermuda Race on his beloved yacht CIRCE in 1976 and won numerous races up and down the east coast.
Manny and his wife Dorothy were early supporters, critical to the initiation of hospice care services on Long Island—and 25 years later he became a beneficiary of their wonderful and compassionate care. Manny was a member of Knickerbocker Yacht Club, Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, American Bonsai Society, and the JCC Gezunter Club. He was a former Commissioner of Roads for Plandome Manor and was also a founding member of both Temple Sinai in Roslyn and Temple Judea in Manhasset.
Manny is survived by his wife of 30 years Dorothy, sons David “Randy” Greene (Abby) Richard “Dick” Greene (Cara), grandchildren Justin (Golru), Michael, Tamsen, William, Gavin, and his great-grandchildren Tabitha, Camron and Layla. Manny also leaves John Graubert, (Alexandra,) Catherine Graubert and Tim Graubert (Becky Parks) and grandchildren David, Nathan, Aaron, Christina, and Maxwell. Manny was predeceased by his first wife Annette.
