Ruth Martin Heidtmann, 97, of Southold, died peacefully in her home on Jan. 13.
She was born Oct. 12, 1916, in Brooklyn to John and Minnie Martin. When Ruth was five, the family moved to Floral Park where she attended John Lewis Childs Elementary School and Sewanhaka High School. She worked for J.C.Penney in New York City until her marriage to Henry G. Heidtmann in 1935.
Together they raised four children and were members of Floral Park United Methodist Church, Brookville Country Club, Garden City Country Club and Ruth was a lifelong member of the Floral Park Chapter #726 Order of the Eastern Star.
he Heidtmanns had a home in Jamesport for 30 years before moving to their retirement home in Southold in 1981. They became members of the North Fork Country Club and Ruth volunteered at ELIH and the Opportunity Shop. Her greatest joy was working in her garden.
Predeceased by her husband Henry and her brother John, she is survived by her children, Carol (Ted) Gault of Fort Myers, FL, Henry Jr. (Susan) of Goshen, CT, Kathleen (John) Einstman of Floral Park, and Glenn (Pamela) of Southold; 18 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.
A service will be held at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes in Southold on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m., the Reverend Jeffrey Kolbo officiating with burial immediately following at the Southold Presbyterian Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to San Simeon Nursing Home in Greenport.
