Babylon Man Arrested for Fatal Stabbing Near Ball Field

A 28-year-old man is facing manslaughter charges after allegedly stabbing a man to death during a fight near two baseball fields in his hometown of Babylon, Suffolk County police said.

Michael Grusel was apprehended after allegedly fleeing the scene, police said.

The 20-year-old victim, James Moran of Bay Shore, was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, police said.

The fight broke out on Locust Avenue at 12:02 p.m. and then escalated. Police said Moran was stabbed during the altercation, and that he told a witness about the wound. That same witness alerted off-duty officer Fred Bothe to the stabbing and he successfully apprehend Grusel with the help of several Good Samaritans, police said. They held him there until uniformed police arrived.

Police did not say what sparked the fight.

Homicide detectives charged Grusel with first-degree manslaughter. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.

The incident forced the Babylon Little League to cancel all remaining games on Saturday.
