Select fifth-graders at Berry Hill Elementary School in Syosset are taking on a new role at the school – as PRIDE Pals. Making their debut at the annual spring PTA book fair, the fifth-graders are student volunteers who exemplify the concept of PRIDE. PRIDE, which stands for patience, respect, integrity, dignity and empathy, is the district-wide character education program that promotes and encourages positive behaviors both in and out of school.
In order to be selected as a PRIDE Pal, interested fifth-graders had to use their persuasive writing skills to compose an application essay and explain the reasons they believed they would be a good role model. Prior to the book fair, PRIDE Pals, who are identified by their strawberry badges, were given a short orientation to explain their assigned task. Each team of students was assigned a time period during which a kindergarten or first-grade class would be visiting the fair. PRIDE Pals were available to assist students in finding books of interest and determining whether the choices fit the budget of the student.
The idea was developed through the PRIDE and Compact for Learning Committees, which is composed of parents, teachers and the principal.
