With their parents by their side, kindergarteners at Dutch Lane Elementary School recently rang in the first annual kinder-garden planting ceremony.
To signify the seeds of successful planting, each child in the class of 2027 planted a tulip bulb in the garden alongside the school.
The ceremony began with a singing performance by the children, which was followed by the kindergarten teachers reading aloud their students’ responses to the question, “what do I want to learn how to do this year?”
The ritual will continue in the spring, when fifth-graders will commemorate the garden by planting a stone they create before moving onto the middle school. Principal Susan Strauss said the ceremony would become a tradition for the school for years to come.
“We have all heard the saying, ‘from tiny seeds grow mighty trees,’” she said. “That is what we strive to do. Each day, we plant the tiny seeds of citizenship, respect, responsibility, curiosity and knowledge in each of our students. The tulip bulbs celebrate the planting of roots at Dutch Lane.”
