Student Named Science Research Finalist

Herricks High School was notified that senior Monica Lee has been selected as one of four national recipients for the 2014 Neuroscience Research Prize on Jan. 25.

Lee is the daughter of Kyung and Byung Lee of Albertson. Her independent research project was conducted over the past two years at the New York University-Alexandria Center for Life Sciences at East River Science Park.  Lee’s research was entitled “Modulating the Innate Immune System through the Stimulation of Toll-Like Receptor 9 as a Therapy for Alzheimer’s Disease in a Tg-SwDI Mouse Model in Both Acute and Long Term Studies.” Lee is a four-year participant in the Herricks High School Science Research program and has been mentored in her research by Renée Barcia, Herricks High School Science Research teacher.

The four winners will each receive a $1,000 prize. Each national finalist and a guest will also receive an expense-paid trip to attend the AAN 67th Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., from April 18–25. This annual meeting is the world’s largest gathering of neurologists.

Lee has been asked to present her work to the attendees. Additionally, she will be presented with the Neuroscience Research Prize at the AAN Awards Luncheon at the Marriott Marquis Washington D.C.

The award is sponsored by the American Academy of Neurology to encourage and reward high school students who explore the world of the brain and nervous system through laboratory research.
