Police Department News

From time to time in this column, I will be including information from Commissioner Kenneth Jackson of our police department. This week he has asked that I include the following.

The Garden City Police Department would like to advise all drivers that this winter’s weather reminds us to make sure that each vehicle has proper working windshield wipers, properly inflated tires and working headlights. Check to ensure that the window washer reservoir is full and only use an anti-freeze solution. Remove snow and ice from all of the vehicle’s windows and exterior light fixtures. Limited visibility during winter storms can be just as hazardous as slippery roads.

Fire Department News

From time to time, in this column, will be including information from Chief William Castoro of our fire department. This week he has asked that I include the following.

As a lot of families will be traveling next week during winter break; here are some safety tips you can take with you while you are traveling:

Your hotel is your home away from home. It is important to be prepared and know what to do in an emergency.

Here are some important tips:

 • When you enter your room, review the escape plan posted in your room.

• Take the time to find the exits and count the number of doors between your room and the exit.

• Keep your room key by your bed and take it with you if there is a fire.

• If the alarm sounds, leave right away, closing al doors behind you. Be sure to use the stairs—never use elevators during a fire.

• If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to your exit.

We hope everyone enjoys their winter break. Please make sure that while you are away you have someone check on your house. As always, more safety tips and information on how you can join the Garden City Volunteer Fire Department can be found on our website www.gcfdny.com

Board Of Trustees Meetings

The next regularly scheduled board of trustees meeting will be on Tuesday, Feb. 17. This is also the Annual Grievance Night which is held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. for the purpose of completing the village assessment roll for the year 2015 and hearing and complaints in relation to the village taxes. I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a firsthand perspective.
