Park Plan Bid Awarded

The New Hyde Park Village Board selected Metro Paving LLC. to handle the revamp of Memorial Park, which is the scene of cracked basketball and tennis courts as well as a rocky walking path. A construction timetable is unknown at this time. Public Works Superintendent Tom Gannon said recently that a March construction start date would have needed a February approval at the latest.

“The schedule has not been set, but I think there will be a timetable once the contract is signed so work can commence,” Mayor Robert Lofaro said.

The Metro bid of $239,934.50 was one of five to vie for the project. Westbury-based Roadwork Ahead submitted a $250,465 plan while John McGowan and Son and Pratt Brothers bid $266,523 and $366,168, respectively. Total Construction Corp. proposed a $425,279 project.

New Hyde Park received a $50,000 grant secured by New York State Senator Jack Martins in April 2014 for the reconstruction of the park. The village also earmarked $75,000 in funds toward the project, based on initial estimates by village engineers from Dvirka and Bartilucci.

Village officials initially believed the state and village monies would cover original bids sent out in September 2014. Only one proposal came in November, which was higher than expected and delayed the project.

“Fortunately this time around we received [more] bids,” trustee and parks liaison Donna Squicciarino said. “Happy to say that hopefully the project will move forward. The bids that came in were pretty reasonable this time.”

Martins secured an additional $150,000 grant recently, bringing New Hyde Park’s project funds to $275,000.
