Village Hall Closes At Noon On Friday, April 3
Residents are reminded that village offices will close at noon on Friday, April 3, in observance of Good Friday and will reopen on Monday, April 6. Correspondence may be dropped in the letter slot at the front of village hall.
Village Wide Election: Congratulations
Congratulations to Mayor-Elect Nicholas P. Episcopia, Trustee John A. DeMaro, Trustee Richard V. Silver and Trustee-Elect Stephen S. Makrinos on their election last Wednesday.
I also want to express gratitude to all of the many residents who took the time to vote in the annual village election and encourage you to become familiar with your property owners’ associations and to become involved with it.
Chamber Of Commerce Easter Parade
The Annual Easter Festival and Antique Car Parade, sponsored by the Garden City Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Easter Sunday, April 5. The parade will step off from parking field No. 9E between Tenth and Eleventh Streets and will proceed south on Franklin Avenue to Seventh Street, west to Hilton Avenue. Easter bunnies will be on Seventh Street during the parade.
Please take time from your busy day and bring the family down to see a great Garden City event. I hope to see you all at the parade.
Fire Department News
From time to time, in this column, will be including information from Chief William Castoro of our fire department. This week he has asked that I include the following.
In light of the recent tragedy where seven children were killed in a fire in Brooklyn, the chief’s office encourages everyone to check their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are in working order. Media reports have indicated that the fire was caused by a hot plate left on overnight and the home did not have any working smoke detectors.
As a reminder; it is the law to have smoke detectors:
1. On the ceiling or wall outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of bedrooms
2. In each room used for sleeping purposes
3. In each story within a dwelling unit, including basements and cellars but not including crawl spaces and uninhabitable attics. In dwellings or dwelling units with split levels and without an intervening door between the adjacent levels, a smoke alarm installed on the upper level shall suffice for the adjacent lower level provided that the lower level is less than one full story below the upper level.
If you are installing only one carbon monoxide detector, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends it be located near the sleeping area, where it can wake you if you are asleep. Additional detectors on every level and in every bedroom of a home provides extra protection against carbon monoxide poisoning. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends CO alarms be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.
Homeowners should remember not to install carbon monoxide detectors directly above or beside fuel-burning appliances, as appliances may emit a small amount of carbon monoxide upon start-up. A detector should not be placed within fifteen feet of heating or cooking appliances or in or near very humid areas such as bathrooms. CO alarms should be replaced every five years in order to benefit from the latest technology and upgrades. Also the carbon monoxide sensors inside the alarm unit can wear out over time.
Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly. If the smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside. Respond quickly. Get up and go, remember to know two ways out of every room, get yourself outside quickly and go to your outside meeting place with your family.

Board Of Trustees Meeting
There will be a budget meeting on Wednesday, April 1st at 7 p.m. in the boardroom at village hall to review the 2015-16 capital budget. The next regular board of trustees meeting will be the annual organizational meeting, at 8 p.m. on Monday, April 6. On this evening, the newly elected mayor and trustees will begin their two-year terms. Trustees will also be assigned positions on the various boards and commissions for the upcoming year. The meeting will be held in the boardroom at village hall. I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so that you can be informed of the many village issues at hand.
