All That Jazz: Broadway
Musicals and Jazz with Dr. Kolb

Jazz is difficult to define, but it is a musical style that combines African-American, European and American musical forms. The Broadway musical would have been utterly different had it not been for the influx of jazz rhythms and techniques. On Thursday, April 2, at 2 p.m., this presentation will explore the ways in which jazz has shaped Broadway songs and dance over more than a half-century. Lecturer: Dr. James Kolb, Professor of Drama & Dance, Hofstra University.

Sex and the Stone Age With Dr. Bill

A fragment of a pinky bone and a tooth twice the size of today’s average molar are the only remnants of a species of humans that we know lived thousands of centuries ago at the same time and place as homo sapiens—and interbred with them. They are a part of us we never knew existed. What did these fellow humans look like? And how do they fit into what we thought we knew about our biological development as a species. Join Dr. Bill Thierfelder on Monday, April 6, at 1 p.m., as we explore the long and winding road that leads to our being the only species of human out of at least twenty that is still standing—and helps explain why every one of us has a remnant of DNA from some of those other species still flowing in our blood. This series focuses on the natural wonders of our planet, on important scientists who help us discover that planet, and on important social events and discoveries that change the way we view our home world. Dr. Thierfelder is a Docent at The American Museum of Natural History.

Museum Highlights: Frederic Church
and the Hudson River School

Ines Powell, Art Historian and docent at Metropolitan Museum of Art, will be with us on Tuesday, April 7, at 2 p.m., with a beautiful visual art lecture.
Frederic Edwin Church (1826 –1900) was an American landscape painter born in Hartford, Connecticut. He is among the best-known representatives of the Hudson River School of landscape painting. Church is also one of the most travelled members of the group. From 1844 to 1846, Church studied with Thomas Cole in his Catskill, New York studio. After finishing his apprenticeship with Cole, Church established himself in New York where he gained a reputation with his spectacular views of New York and New England. In the 1850s Church undertook two expeditions to South America, to Colombia first, and then to Ecuador. He made numerous sketches during his journeys, which on his return served him as the basis for the many landscapes he painted in his studio in New York. These paintings, such as The Heart of the Andes (1859) established Church as one of the most celebrated and successful painters of his generation. In 1860, Church moved his family to a farm overlooking the Hudson River in Hudson, NY.
