Two exciting games are planned by Schreiber coaches to raise money for cancer research. On April 25, the Schreiber baseball squads will play a triple header against Mineola. They will also sandwich in a Parents Softball Game. The following weekend, on May 2, the softball teams will play host to Valley Stream North in their own three game set. Both events are being held in an effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

The eighth grade boys will lead off the day on April 25 with a 9:30 start time. After that, the varsity team will take the field at 12:30. At 3 p.m., parents and alums will showcase their talents in the softball game. To cap off the day, the junior varsity boys will play their game at 4:15. All games will be played at Guggenheim Elementary School.

Varsity Baseball coach Matt Holzer, along with his team, has been involved with this event for the past several years. “This our fourth year doing it and we have raised approximately $6,200, said Holzer. This is a group effort done with the help of Assistant Coach Spotteck and Junior Varsity Coach Hosemann and many of the parents.

“The Port Vikings baseball program feels it is crucial to continue to raise awareness and funds to try and fight this disease,” said Holzer.

The fee to participate in the softball game is $20 per player. With half of the proceeds going to Cancer Research, the other half will go to Port Washington Vikings Baseball Booster Club. There will be food, beverages and desserts for sale at the games. T-shirts will also be sold all in an effort to help raise money for this cause.

The softball team will have their rendition of Coaches vs. Cancer on Saturday, May 2. All three games will be played at Sunset Field on Main Street. The middle school team will begin at 1 p.m. Following them will be the junior varsity squad at 4 p.m. Finally, the varsity squad will play in the night cap at 7 p.m. under the lights.

About five years ago, varsity softball coach Eric Sutz thought of bringing this national movement to a local level. After the passing of a fellow coach’s mother from cancer, Sutz along with that coach, brought the concept to Port Washington.

“We wanted to contribute to the American Cancer Society and to teach the girls there is a bigger sense of responsibility,” said Sutz. “It’s not just playing, but giving back to the community.”

The girls’ event will also raise money by selling raffles, t-shirts and hosting a BBQ on the day of the games. A majority of the money raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society. The girls have gone out into the community to sell raffle tickets and held clinics showing their eagerness to be a part of this fundraiser.
