The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education appointed John Capozzi as assistant superintendent for personnel and administration for the district on March 24. He replaces Denise Nystrom, who will be retiring. Capozzi will assume the post on Aug. 1.
“The district is very fortunate to have an administrator of Mr. Capozzi’s caliber to serve as assistant superintendent for personnel administration,” Sewanhaka said in a statement.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ralph Ferrie said Capozzi is a proven leader and he will be a welcome addition to the central administrative team. David Fowler, president of the board of education, expressed his enthusiasm about Capozzi’s appointment. He stated that Capozzi has proven his commitment to upholding the mission of the disrict.
Capozzi has been with the district for 21 years, beginning his career as a social studies teacher at Elmont Memorial High School. In 2002, he became an assistant principal before being elevated to principal in July 2005.
Capozzi has been the recipient of many honors, including The Nassau BOCES Partner in Education Award. He was cited in U.S. News and World Report for his role in student advancement and has been a presenter at several educational conferences on best instructional practices and on closing the achievement gap.
Capozzi expressed pride in his achievements and those of his students at Elmont Memorial. He views the assistant superintendent’s position as a new beginning in his career.
