The Carle Place High School north cafeteria was transformed into an art gallery this past Friday, April 17, as students displayed their work for the annual art show.
More than 100 photos, ceramic pieces, drawings and paintings were displayed at the event, which is sponsored annually by the Carle Place Arts and Education Booster Club. The event gives students the chance to not only show off their work, but see what their peers are doing.

“For the A&E Booster Club, it’s a great opportunity to promote the fine art students whose talent and passion might otherwise be overlooked,” said co-organizer Cindy Murphy. “To see the pride on a student’s face as their artwork is recognized either as a winning piece or simply by being displayed is a huge reward for us.”
Among the students who had work displayed was senior Seth Barbosa. Barbosa is a well-known student artist in Carle Place and had several pieces displayed. He noted that his work was an outlet that allowed him to relieve himself of negativity and bad experiences, and that he was glad to share that connection with others.
“I’m happy people like it and find something good in my art,” Barbosa said. “People tend to like the emotional art, because people don’t see that [often] and it brings them comfort and makes them happy when they see something that’s honest.”

Caroline Leddy also had several works exhibited, including a picture of the skyline from Central Park.
“I’m going to be going to college in Manhattan, so this shows what my future is going to be like,” Leddy said. “It’s someplace where I can find inspiration for my other works.”
Also on display were pieces from The Memory Project, where students got to draw or paint a portrait of a neglected, orphaned or disadvantaged child in the Dominican Republic. These portraits will be sent to the children overseas.
“I don’t know what their lives are like and to be able to do something for somebody I don’t even know is awesome,” Leddy said. “It gives you a chance to give back. I enjoyed doing it because I don’t get to do stuff like this often.”
Local artists Max Grey and Jay Stuart judged the show and awarded certificates to the best pieces in each category. The winners were Jessie Yu for the Memory Project; Toni Pellegrino for Photography; Samantha Mannarino for Painting; Anthony Machado for Metalwork/Sculpture and Barbosa for Drawing.
Grey, who is a Carle Place High School alum and owns a photography studio in the community, said that all the work she saw was impressive.
“I think it’s amazing it comes from high school students,” Grey said. “I hope they see just how amazing their talent is.”
