Kids Korner Sales Soar

In March, the DeRosa Foundation for Colon Cancer Research and Prevention Junior Committee hosted a Kids Corner Sale at both Manhasset High School and Great Neck South High School. As March is colon cancer awareness month, the Junior Committee and school administration agreed that our educational institutions were a perfect environment to help bring attention to colorectal health issues. The Junior Committee sold a variety of items including chocolate lollipops, gummy candy, pajamas, notecards, blue insignia rubber bracelets and hair ties with or in the shape of stars, which is the symbol for colon cancer awareness. The sale took place in the cafeterias at both High Schools during the second week of March. In addition to offering fun articles and treats, the students distributed fact cards describing the symptoms of colon cancer together with literature stating the De Rosa Foundation’s mission and where the funds raised are donated. The event was a huge success and raised over $1,300.
Dr. Dean Schlanger, Manhasset’s principal and Mara Steindam, community service coordinator at Manhasset High School, Susan Elliott, Great Neck principal in addition to Amanda Cohn, junior committee member who managed the Cure of Great Neck South High School and supported the De Rosa Foundation and the Junior Committee. The secondary schools provided a perfect, collaborative environment which included students and faculty alike, to raise attention to this important health issue.
