Marilyn Elizabeth (Rinaldi) FitzGerald of Salem died on Friday, April 3, 2015 at Salem Hospital, surrounded by her children. Marilyn was born on September 29, 1932 at Dr. Daly’s Sanitorium (now Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens) in Astoria, Queens, and grew up in Great Neck, Long Island, NY. She was the daughter of the late James Jackman Rinaldi and Magdalene (Lee) Hohmeister Rinaldi.
She was educated at St. Aloysius Elementary School and Great Neck North High School. She received an Associates Degree in Home Economics from Mount Aloysius Junior College in Cresson, PA in 1953. After graduating, Marilyn attended Wood Secretarial School in Manhattan. She worked for Arrow Shirts in Manhattan until 1962, when she married John E. FitzGerald of Manhasset, NY. The couple resided first in Great Neck and then Manhasset, where they raised three children. The family lived in Plandome, an incorporated village of Manhasset, for sixteen years before moving to Stamford, CT in 1985. Marilyn worked for Fleet Bank in Stamford until her retirement in 1997. In 2008 she moved to Salem, MA to be closer to her children, who had all relocated to Massachusetts. Marilyn enjoyed living in Salem. She attended daily mass at Ste. Anne’s on Jefferson Ave. She also enjoyed going into Boston, particularly the North End, where she could find the Italian foods that she had grown up with. Marilyn enjoyed cooking, baking, and caring for her dogs, including her last dog, Shannon, who lived for seventeen years. In her later years Marilyn traveled extensively with her sister, Joan K. Rinaldi. Together they visited over 30 countries. Her greatest pleasure, however, came from her family by whom she is survived: her daughters Marilyn and Mary Lee FitzGerald of Salem, MA; and her son, John FitzGerald of Gloucester, MA. Marilyn was predeceased by her husband John E. FitzGerald and her sister Joan K. Rinaldi.
