The Port Washington community came out in full force for the annual Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 25. The parade kicked off on Campus Dr. at 10 a.m., proceeded from Port Blvd. to Main St., and then culminated in a ceremony at Sunset Park. Residents young and old lined the sides of Main St., cheering, applauding and waving the flags distributed by the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce. The community spirit and pride was palpable.
Ray Slavinsky, the American Legion Post 509 Grand Marshal, and Rollins Bruce Darling, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1819 Grand Marshal, led the festivities. Marching with pride were veterans, Girl and Boy Scouts, PYA, groups from the churches and synagogues, bands, bagpipes, cheerleaders, the police and fire departments and many other community groups.
Memorial Day, of course, is a solemn day to remember the men and women who died while serving our country. On a lighter note, it also marks the unofficial beginning of the summer. What could be a better way to kick off the summer than to come together to remember, celebrate and take pride in our community?
