Syosset resident and Long Island state Senator Carl Marcellino is being investigated over claims that he inappropriately billed the state for travel expenses.
Nassau County Acting District Attorney Madeline Singas’ office is currently going over the Republican’s records in an effort to find out if the senator billed both taxpayers and his campaign committee for the same expenses from 2010 to 2013, according to published reports.
The claim alleges that during that time period, Marcellino’s campaign committee was billed $20,000 in vehicle expenses, while at the same time the state reimbursed him $18,500.
“Albany’s mileage reimbursement and per diem system requires no backup documentation and is prone to abuse,” said Singas. “I encourage the legislature to take prompt action to give New Yorkers confidence that lawmakers are not padding their salaries at taxpayer expense.”
Marcellino did not return calls for comment.
