Upcoming Road Closures

The New York State Department of Transportation, Region 10 Long Island (NYSDOT) project to provide fresh, new pavement markings and its biennial bridge inspection program are now underway on various state roadways throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Under the $7.2 million pavement marking project 24 locations on various selected roads will be re-striped to assure proper visibility and maintain safe traffic movement and vehicle detouroperation on Long Island. NYSDOT is also performing bridge inspections on most every major state road in Nassau and Suffolk County to ensure the continued safety of the millions of motorists who travel over and under these bridges each week.

To minimize the inconvenience to drivers, both the pavement marking and bridge inspection operations are being performed mostly during off-peak midday hours and require single or double travel lane closures rather than full road closures. However, pavement marking work on the Long Island Expressway (LIE/I-495) will be performed at night. Work on the LIE service roads will be done both at night and during off-peak daytime hours when traffic volumes are lowest. The lane closure hours are determined by the traffic volumes of each location, but generally, lanes will be closed Monday through Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and overnight between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Both the pavement marking work and bridge inspections are performed as short duration operations that move to new locations as each is completed. As with most road work projects, these operations are weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather.

New pavement markings are being provided on sections of the following state roadways: the LIE and service roads, NY Routes 24, 27, 27A, 101, 106, and 108, and Glen Cove Road and Simeon Woods Road.

Bridges are being inspected on the Southern State, Northern State, Sagtikos, Sunken Meadow, Wantagh, Meadowbrook, and Ocean parkways, Robert Moses Causeway, the LIE, and NY Routes 24, 25, 25A, 25B, 27, 27A, 105, 106, 107, 109, 110, 111, 114, 135 and 454 as well as numerous county and local roadways. Bridge condition information is used to establish preventative and corrective maintenance programs as well as bridge rehabilitation and replacement programs.

Wherever possible, motorists are being warned in advance of the closures via overhead INFORM electronic signs. However, drivers are urged to remain alert for active construction vehicles ahead performing this important road and bridge work throughout the busy summer construction season. Long Island motorists are encouraged to drive carefully through all work zone areas and follow the posted detour signs for their safety as well as the safety of the highway work crew. Drivers are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone and that the Move-Over Law includes all hazard vehicles with amber lights such as tow trucks and construction vehicles.
For 24/7 up-to-date traffic and travel information, motorists should call 511 or visit www.511NY.org. Motorists may also obtain travel information from the INFORM Transportation Management Center cameras at www.INFORMNY.com and on their hand held communication devices at www.INFORMNY.mobi .

The New York State Department of Transportation appreciates the patience and cooperation of motorists and local residents during this necessary highway and bridge safety improvement work.
