Opinion: Tell Them What?

—By Charles Samek

I am referring to the column by New York State Senator Jack Martins in the Nov. 25-Dec. 1 of the Mineola American titled “Tell Washington No.”

It is fair to say that I and the people don’t work for Senator Martins. He works for us and don’t tell us what to do.

In reality, the worst threat we live with is that aging nuclear reactor up the river. One natural calamity or human error and New York City and the tri-state area could become a ghost town for some hundred years.

The proposed Syrian refugees averages 200 per state. The majority of them would be women and children.

We can count on our federal government to scrutinize each one thoroughly. Receiving refugees is in the federal realm and not at the whim of bigoted republicans: Governors or others.

There are many respected Muslim communities in the U.S. who have respect for themselves. They cherish being here and among our citizens.

They understand well the terror that has long existed in Syria at the hands of the father and son murderous dictators. They would be more than happy to help the refugees adjust to living here.

Their threat would be nowhere equal that of the NRA, the out of control law enforcement officers and the right wing Christian radicals, etc. Many innocent lives have been lost due to the foregoing.

In conclusion, I believe that I have succeeded in holding my emotional nature in check and that I have said enough.

One added thought is that we need the desired increase in the minimum wage.
