A Survivor Tree was recently planted at the Nassau County Police Academy. Tom Single of Boy Scout Troop 660 was granted a Survivor Tree after requesting one for his town from the 9/11 museum.
With the help of Massapequa schools, a suitable location was found at the current Nassau County Police Academy. Many trees were lost during Hurricane Sandy at this location in Massapequa Park and it seemed like a very good spot to put such a tree. Richard Begandy, head of the local V.F.W. Post, local Massapequa Park politicians, board of trustees members Tina Schiaffino and Teresa Spinosa and Deputy Mayor Rose Cain were in attendance. A national 9/11 victims representative, Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, Legislator James Kennedy and local police along with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts all participated in the planting of this tree. There are also plans to put a plaque and benches built by the high school shop class by the tree in the near future.
It was a beautiful day with a positive message about moving forward and helping the community.
