For the past 19 years, Victor Caputo has brought numerous first-class cultural events to the Bryant Library, where he has served as Director of Public Relations. It’s hard to single out a highlight from his time on that job, but having television legend Susan Lucci give a talk was certainly one that stands out, as was an appearance by the late columnist and author, James Brady.

In reward for his stellar work, Caputo has been name Library Director, replacing Cathy Mealing who recently retired after her own long years of service to the library.

“The Board of Trustees, Administration and Staff of The Bryant Library would like to congratulate Victor Caputo on his new position as Library Director,” read a statement in the library’s most recent newsletter. “Over the course of 19 years, Victor has made a remarkable impact on our community as the Director Public Relations/Programs at Bryant. He has forged great relationships with staff, patrons, and members of the community. We look forward to seeing Victor apply his enthusiasm, innovative way of thinking, and ideals that have served him so well in the past to his new role.”

Before working for the library, Caputo worked in journalism, including a stint at Anton MediaGroup, which publishes The Roslyn News.

As she announced her retirement, Mealing gave some advice to Caputo.
“I advised Vic [Caputo] to spend at least one or two hours a week at the desk,” Mealing said. “It’s a way of staying in touch with staff and patrons. I also suggested that he keep one thing from this former position that he really loved doing. It will make him happy and it will help to smooth the transition into his new role as director.”

There is little doubt that such sage advice will be taken. In his previous position, Caputo substantially enhanced the cultural standing of the library and he looks to do the same in his new role, as the library now continues to provide much stimulation for the Roslyn area and its ambitious residents.
