Boy Scouts from across BSA Shelter Rock District recently gathered at Muttontown Preserve to compete in the annual Klondike Derby. As is tradition, Mineola Troop 45 brought home top honors. A Klondike Derby is based on the heritage of the Klondike Gold Rush. Pulling homemade sleds loaded with gear, Scouts navigated the trails at Muttontown to visit various “cities” where they demonstrated Scout skills such as first aid, orienteering and fire building. The Screaming Eagles Patrol won first place in the Younger Boy division. The Phoenix Patrol won 2nd place in the Older Boy division. Troop 45 Leadership Corp (LC), led by Senior Patrol Leader Brian Franz, won first place in the Older Boy division—a streak that stretches nearly two decades.
