If there’s a class that piques your interest, you can obtain a visitor pass to attend one session, which will give you the opportunity to meet the instructor, talk to students and see the class in action.
There are new courses, trips and special events this spring. New classes for adults include Beethoven in History; Italy: City by City; Communicate to Be Heard; Mindful Meditation; Pinterest; Middlemarch, A Slow or Closed Reading; Spanish for Health Care Personnel; and What’s Your Line?—Drawing from the Model.
New classes for children include Young Speakers (Public Speaking for Grades 5–8) and Around the World in Many Languages (week-long, morning immersion).
New day trips include St. Patrick’s Cathedral; Edgewater Estate; Bruce Museum/Brant Foundation; Alexander Hamilton’s New York; Hyde Park and Val-Kill: The Roosevelts; Ellis Island and Castle Garden; Wadsworth Atheneum; Iconic NYC: NBC Studios and NY Public Library; and a two-night Berkshires, MA, Arts and Culture Tour.
One-session special events include Feast at Lola Restaurant with Lunch and Demo; Melds, Mediterranean Style: Canasta at Limani; Pastrami on Rye, Author Visit with former GN resident, Ted Merwin; Canasta and Cantonese at Moonstone; American Musical Memories; and the Art and Beauty of Egg Decoration.
Community Education also has offerings in English language and literature, such as poetry, memoir writing, writers’ workshop, ESOL, Shakespeare, world literature, book group and Greek and Roman literature.
In fine arts and fine crafts, experience painting, drawing, watercolor, collage, pottery, stone sculpture, jewelry making, hand weaving, printmaking, pastels and silver smithing.
Foreign language instruction offers Chinese, French, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish and Yiddish.
For those with a passion for games, there’s bridge, canasta and mah-jongg.
Home and family offerings include defensive driving, CPR, college financing, elder law, wellness, SAT/ACT prep for teens and Chinese for kids.
Humanities offerings include classes about American history, history you ought to know, supreme court decisions and talking baseball.
Musical options, such as opera appreciation, piano, singing for fun, cabaret and Cumberland singers, are available.
Sports and fitness classes are also available with classes like body workout, low-impact aerobics, Pilates, Zumba, line dancing, seated exercise, ballet, modern dance, body conditioning, yoga, hand-weight training, cardio fit, movement for those with Parkinson’s, tai chi, qi gong, tennis, golf and water exercise.
The technology program has courses that explore Google, iPad, Gmail, Word I, Excel, Quicken, Quickbooks, Facebook, blogging, Photoshop, website design and animation. Community Ed can also customize personal training to meet your needs.
So whether you’re looking to try something new or retake a favorite class, options abound for all.
