The South Middle School Music Department will present its Spring Concerts on Monday and Tuesday, May 23 and 24, beginning at 7:30 p.m. both evenings, and the Art Department will present its Spring Art Show on Friday, May 20, and Monday, May 23, through Thursday, May 26. All events will be held at the school, located at 349 Lakeville Rd.

The May 23 concert will feature Senior Orchestra, Chorus 7/8 and Senior Band. Classical selections performed will feature music by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Bobrowitz. Popular works by Imagine Dragons and music from Les Miserables will also be heard.

The May 24 concert will feature Orchestra 6, Sixth-Grade Treble Chorus and Band 6. Classical selections will feature music by Bach and Rossini. Popular works by Blood, Sweat and Tears, Duke Ellington, Spencer Davis and music from Aladdin will also be performed.

As always, the concerts are free and the brief programs (less than an hour) offer perfect opportunities to introduce children from pre-K through grade 5 to the concerts they could be a part of in the future.

Instrumental students are taught by Department Head Alan Schwartz and Mark Boschen. Teaching assistant/student teacher Andrew DeNise will guest conduct three of the pieces. Choral students are taught by Shelley Willcox.

In addition to viewing the Art Show during school hours on May 20 and from May 23 to 26, concertgoers may enjoy the exhibit on display in the school lobby. Art by students in grades 6, 7 and 8 will be displayed, and the work of the eighth-grade Art Foundations classes, as well as a variety of drawings, paintings, prints, collages and ceramics, will be featured.

South Middle’s art teachers are Department Head Cynthia Smith, Geoffrey Mead and Karla Krupala.
