Philip Jang and Ben Rhee of Syosset High School have been recognized for their high scores in the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad and the 2016 USA Biology Olympiad competition.
Sponsored by the American Chemical Society, the National Chemistry Olympiad event is designed to foster excellence in chemistry for young adults. The competition consists of local exams followed by an intense national competition, which ultimately leads to the selection of a four-student team that represents the United States in an international competition. Rhee was among those chosen from the Long Island local exam. Jang was chosen as an alternate for the competition.
Additionally, Rhee and Jang were named semifinalists in the 2016 USA Biology Olympiad competition. Both will be taking the semifinalist exam to continue on in the competition. They were among eight students from Syosset High School who took the initial USABO open exam in February. Following two rounds of challenging exams, the top 20 finalists will be invited to compete at the national finals at Marymount University from May 29 through June 10.
