Beat the High Cost of College
Applying for college and getting college financial aid isn’t easy. This seminar, led by Barry Fox, will help you fill out the FAFSA, plan a needs analysis, negotiate with colleges, calculate your “expected family contribution,” learn how to conduct free Internet scholarship searches, and more. There will be time at the end of the program for questions. This program is open to parents and teens getting ready to apply for college. From 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Bar Harbour auditorium. Substance Abuse Prevention Fair
Plainedge High School will host a medical official from New York State’s substance abuse prevention agency to speak about the newest treatment for heroi
n and pain pill addiction, how and why it works and to answer any questions from the public. This free educational forum and resource fair will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at Plainedge High School, located at 241 Wyngate Drive. It will feature the latest information on Naltrexone, a free Naloxone training for residents and an opportunity to learn more about the new and successful drug and alcohol treatment program that the county calls “A Shot at Life.” Speakers as well as individuals in recovery from addiction and their family members will also be in attendance. Massapequa Park Turkey Trot
Help raise funds to continue the fight to increase awareness, prevent and treat drug use and abuse and promote healthy families and a safe community with the seventh annual Massapequa Park Turkey Trot at Brady Park. YES to Conduct NYS Mandated Reporter Classes
YES Community Counseling Center is approved by the New York State Department of Education to provide the state’s two-hour certification training for mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. Individuals seeking employment or certification in the education or health care fields may be required to complete this course. The next training will be provided from 4 to 6 p.m. at the agency’s location at 75 Grand Ave., Massapequa. The cost is $25 per person, payable in advance. Massapequa’s 2016 Turkey Trot
The Massapequa Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot is a community driven event designed to raise money to fight cancer. Through the efforts of the Turkey Trot’s main benefactor, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), the race has raised thousands of dollars since it’s inception in 2010 to combat blood cancers. All proceeds from the event are given to the LLS. At John J. Burns Park at 8:45 a.m. The Fun Run is $10 while the 5K Run is $28 if registered by Nov. 23 a nd $35 day of race.

Plainedge Public School students in grade six and up are needed as volunteers for children’s crafts/activities during the 2016-17 school year. All applicants are accepted into a pool of eligible volunteers who will be called upon from time to time during the school year.
