A fast-moving winter storm may dump six or more inches of snow on Long Island this week, although the forecast may change with the track of the storm, forecasters said.
If it hits, the storm is expected to arrive Wednesday night and last into Thursday before going out to sea, according to a hazardous weather outlook issued Monday morning for Nassau and Suffolk counties by Upton-based National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists.
“Uncertainty with this storm is high as the atmosphere dynamics that will potentially cause the storm to develop along our coast are still out over the Pacific Ocean,” NWS said in a statement. “This storm, if it does develop, should be a fast mover and be out to sea by Thursday afternoon.”
The statement covered much of the New York Metro area, which could also be impacted.
The weather outlook came as rain is likely overnight Monday into Tuesday and a slight chance of rain is expected Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to drop into the high 20s Wednesday night, when snow is likely to start falling, forecasters said.
Skies are expected to clear up Friday, although a slight chance of flurries and then rain is expected for Saturday and Sunday.
