A Queens man who drove drunk, caused a crash that killed three and fled the scene on the Southern State Parkway was sentenced Tuesday to 12 to 36 years in prison.
A Suffolk County jury found Oneil Sharpe guilty in February of vehicular homicide, manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident.
Authorities have said the 26-year-old man was drunk while speeding more than 80 mph westbound in a BMW when he rear-ended a car near exit 41 in North Bay Shore at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, July 12, 2015.
Three members of the family of four returning home to St. Albans after a family party in Central Islip—37-year-old Ancio Ostane and his two children, Andy, 8, and Sephora, 4—were trapped in the burning vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, police have said. Their mother and Ancio’s wife, Lucnie Bouaz-Ostane, escaped and was treated for her injuries.
Sharpe’s friend, 24-year-old Demetri Stewart, also of Queens, had pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a fatal accident and hindering prosecution for driving Sharpe to Sharpe’s mother’s house in Rockville Centre after the crash.
Judge Fernando Comacho, who followed prosecutors’ recommendation to give Sharpe the maximum sentence, last week sentenced Stewart to one to three years in prison for his role as getaway driver.
