Girls Fencing Team Wins Tense Meet

The Garden City Girls Fencing team recently went to the bitter end against Valley Stream High School. Led by their dedicated coach, Denise Holz, the team fought hard in a meet that was tied until the last fencer was up. In fencing, the first team to reach a score of 14 wins. Fencer Hope Mauceri subbed for team manager Grace D’Angelo, who kept score while tensely watching her team in a close meet. Senior Foil Captain Tia Petrides won all three bouts, while some losses were close bouts for her teammates.

The tide turned when with the score of 12-13 Valley Stream, Epee Emma van Dyke won her bout 5-3, bringing the score to a tie. The last fencer up, Epee Captain Mary Foxen, won her bout 5-4 locking in the win for Garden City. Foxen, a sophomore, said “Our fencing team has an incredible energy. Everyone pushes themselves harder everyday; rather than worrying about individual records, we work and improve our skill together. And this is what sets us apart from the competition.”
