Franz Steiner, owner of Steiner Pastry Shop, was honored by state and local officials on Good Friday, just two days before closing his door at 432 Plandome Rd. Steiner, who has been creating delectable treats in the Manhasset community for 39 years, lost his lease. The space has been leased to Green’s Pub next door.

The bakery was filled with members of the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce, Town of North Hempstead officials and many of Steiner’s faithful patrons who love his baking. Steiner had to take a short break from the busy flow of customers to accept a Proclamation from Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and Councilwoman Anna Kaplan, recognizing his dedication and his contribution as a merchant of Manhasset. The demand of the community kept making his shelves bare with all the cakes, donuts and cookies being snatched up as quickly as he could make them.

Steiner also was recognized by Matt Capp, a representative from New York State Senator Elaine Phillips office. The senator was in Albany diligently working on passing a comprehensive New York state budget.

Though Steiner’s lease forced him to close after April 1, he said “I am looking for space to relocate” his bakery equipment to continue producing his quality products. But that is after a well deserved break, his wife added. Steiner accepted the awards along with his wife and mother-in-law, “Mutti,” who flew in from Austria to help Steiner through the holidays.
