Studious Youngsters Net Top Honors

Paul D. Schreiber High School students won 15 different awards in various categories between the recent Long Island Science and Engineering Fair and the New York State Science and Engineering Fair (NYSSEF).

NYSSEF award winners included Zachary Gruber who won first place in biomedical engineering, Joseph Melkonian who won second place in mathematics and received the Mu Alpha Theta award, Julia Ruskin who earned third place in the social sciences category and Kushal Upadhyay who received an honorable mention for mathematics.

At the LISEF, Port students took home grande awards, special awards and JV awards. Grande Award recipients included Zachary Gruber who earned third place in the biomedical engineering category, Joseph Melkonian who placed third in the mathematics category, Molly McLoughlin who won third place for environmental engineering and Julia Ruskin who received an honorable mention in the behavioral and social sciences category.

Special Award recipients included Joseph Melkonian who earned the Mu Alpha Theta award, Molly McLoughlin who won the Association of Women Geoscientists award and Julia Ruskin who earned the American Psychology award.

JV Award recipients were Dalia Bercow and Leah Taylor who earned first place for behavioral and social sciences, Emma Levin who won first place in the environmental science category, Emma Klein and Diya Sani who earned second place in medicine and health and Brittany Polevikov who received an honorable mention for behavioral and social sciences.

The district congratulates these students, as well as teachers Ray Divenuto, Marla Ezratty, Tina Gallagher, George Muhlbauer and John Schineller for guiding these young minds.
“Schreiber research students continue to make their mark in these prestigious and very selective competitions,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Mooney. “Equally impressive is the wide range of interests and disciplines they study. From the environment to medicine to social sciences, they have the key concerns and issues effecting our world covered.”
