Port North Wins Tourney

Basketball 080118ADespite most of the team playing up one grade level, Port North went 2-0 to take the championship of the Kay Day Basketball Tournament played at Lincoln Park in Hempstead. The tourney is a charity event for the family of a young boy from that community killed in a tragic hit-and-run accident.

In the first game Port came roaring out of the gate and then cruised to a 29-21 win over the Future Ballerz. In the championship game Port took on an older team representing the Hempstead Rec Center. Trailing most of the fist half, Port North finally took a one-point lead at the halftime buzzer. Led by MVP Jack Connolly, Port North won the championship 36-33. Max Einbender and Jake Siciliano battled the big boys on the boards while Kenny Daly, Cole Reyes and the relentless Jay Kim played smart error free ball. Big baskets down the stretch by Ryan Shanahan and newcomer Isiah Blunt held off the boys from Hempstead. For the Port North team it was a day of good basketball and fun for a worthy cause.
