During the month of August, United Way of Long Island is inviting various companies to collect school supplies on behalf of children who are in underserved school districts. The supplies will be donated to local districts as part of United Way’s annual Stuff-A-Bus Campaign. Senator Elaine Phillips, who is a sponsor for this campaign, along with United Way has placed collection boxes in every library in the seventh Senate District including the Port Washington Public Library to collect supplies.
The library is accepting the following school supply items for donation: Backpacks, lunch boxes, notebooks, pocket folders, pens, pencils, washable markers, highlighters, pencil cases, crayons, glue/glue sticks, scissors, rulers, sticky notes, index cards and hand wipes.
“The Port Washington Public Library is an institution that treats all members of our community equally, so it makes perfect sense to participate in a campaign to ensure that all children have what they need to excel in the classroom,” said library director Keith Klang.
Last year, tens of thousands of school supply items were delivered on behalf of children in the underserved school districts of Copiague, Central Islip and Brentwood.
The drop box for donations is located at the library’s main circulation desk. People can drop off their donated items at the library until Friday, Aug. 31. Items can also be dropped off at United Way of Long Island’s main office in Deer Park, which is located at 819 Grand Blvd.
