Mineola students participated in the Empty Bowls Project to help put food on the table for local families in need.

On March 27, Mineola High School eighth grade National Junior Art Honor Society members joined their seventh grade counterparts at Mineola Middle School for a special Empty Bowls art project that will give back to local food charities.

Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement by artists and crafts people in cities and towns around the world that raises money for food-related charities to care for and feed the hungry in their communities.

Karen Bernstein, supervisor of fine and performing arts for the Mineola school district, said students glazed over 80 beautiful bowls, which will be sold at various district art events and Art Honor Society induction ceremonies.

“Our National Junior Art Honor Society will be selling bowls for the “Empty Bowls Project” at the District Art Show,” said Bernstein. “Empty Bowls Project is an international project to fight hunger, personalized by artists and art organizations on a community level. Bowls will be on sale for $12 and the money raised is donated to a local food bank in Mineola to help fight hunger in our community.”

Bernstein said this project was an extracurricular activity that students signed up to participate in, not a National Junior Art Honor Society requirement.

“Our National Junior Art Honor Society members dedicated their time after school to paint bowls and glaze them for the fundraiser,” said Bernstein. “Leading up to it they have done smaller fundraiser projects to help purchase the bowls.”

The National Junior Art Honor Society is an Art Honor Society for students in 7th and 8th grade. Bernstein said students and their advisor are working with the community to determine which local food bank proceeds will go to.

Bowls will be sold at the Mineola District Art Show and the Mineola Macaroni Night on Thursday April 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Bowls will also be sold at the Mineola High School Art Show on Tuesday May 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
